Vassilios Kokkas, (*1965, Athens, Greece) is a greek german composer of new music in the western, modern traditional sense. Fundamental influences range from Bach to Debussy, to Darmstadt, Xenakis and Cage, Nono, Mario Bertoncini, LaMonte Young and Alvin Lucier, through the richness of environmental soundscapes and noise, and the ancient polyphonic tradition of Epirus. Kokkas concluded formal studies in music at the Universität der Künste Berlin with Walter Zimmermann with a diploma of composition in 1996, after studies in piano, flute and music theory, analysis and composition in his birth town Athens. In consequence to his bicultural european origin (son of german painter Astrid Nehrig-Kokka and greek architect Christos Kokkas), his compositions emerge in intermediate territories in between sound art and music, objectivity and subjectivity, handwriting and algorithmic composition, fixed text and improvisation. Despite his academic curriculum, Vassilios stands for the qualities of being also a self-taught composer and musician on an unusual musical path with its own, individual, character.
Mr. Kokkas' public performances include compositions for diverse combinations of instruments, electroacoustic tapes, computers, sound generating algorithms, live electronics, site specific sound installations in exceptional spaces like a historical war ship engine compartment, a planetarium, underwater environment, short film, video, a virtual museum in the form of a video game, photography, dance and piano/computer improvisation.
His curatorial activities include the artistic management for the new music Ensemble Mosaik, Berlin, in its first year of existence, organization of concerts of new and electroacoustic music, and active participation in the core of the artist group Personal Cinema in Athens.
His academic teaching activities are extremely versatile: realization of digital acoustic art workshops as a visiting professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts postgraduate new media department, lecturing at the UdK Berlin Music and Architecture faculties, piano teaching, and graduate level composition teaching, along with lectures, workshops and seminars at reputed international universities. But also constructing instruments, working, improvising, and playing music with children of various ages.
inaugurated by Brazilian President Lula and soccer star Pele, Vassilios sound installation for the National Pavilion of Greece at the 2004 Sao Paulo Bienal, commissioned by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, reached over 2000 visitors per day. His music for the virtual museum in the form of a video game, The Making of the Balkan Wars, was commissioned by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture for ARCO Madrid 2004, where Greece was the honored country in that year. realized in the very center of Athens, the large-scale audio-visual installation “Athena’s Gift” was commissioned by the City of Athens and AICA Hellas.
His works have enjoyed performances with highly qualified musicians, distinguished for their interpretations of contemporary music, as the Ensemble Modern Frankfurt, the Ensemble Mosaik Berlin, the Bass Clarinetist Jürg Frey, the Arte Saxophone Quartet, Basel, conductors Georgios Sfyridis and Olivier Dejours, recorder soloist Katja Reiser, among significant other performers and ensembles. His work has been honored by composer portrait events by the Festival Moments Musicaux, the Institute for Research in Music and Acoustics, Athens, the Goethe Institute Athens and the DESTE International Cultural Foundation.
Vassilios Kokkas was Composer in Residence at the Künstlerhaus Lukas of the German Cultural Foundation in 2000 and Composer in Residence at the Studio for Electronic Music of the German Academy of the Arts, Berlin, in 1998.
His compositions have been recognized by commissions, stipend awards, invitations and residencies by the Greek Society for Aesthetics, The Vice-Mayor of Athens for Cultural Affairs, the Greek Association of Art Critics, the German Cultural Foundation, The Michelis Foundation, contemporary experimental music festival Moments Musicaux Aarau, Swizerland, the Akedemie der Künste zu Berlin and the Hellenic Ministry of Culture.
Vassilios Kokkas currently lives inbetween his daughters Zoe and Manuka and his sanga of seven dogs in Athens, composing a new work.
Scores and recordings of his works are currently distributed with the independent label Nice-Music.Org.
